Abstract

The exquisite quality of the Upper Paleolithic paintings is brought into relation with the artistic talents of the autistic savant. The linguistic limitations of the autistic individual suggest a congruent status of mind with the archaic people of the Upper Paleolithic, which could indicate language in its infancy. This notion is examined in terms of archaeological, paleontological, art historical, neurological, semiotic, and cognitive views on language evolution.
